Etheridge Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WEST HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA

MARCH 14, 2008

GAY/PRIDE WEEKENDS ARE AN IMPORTANT TIME TO CELEBRATE AND REFLECT

The West Hollywood Lesbian Visibility Committee announces the 2008 Etheridge Award will be presented to Senator Sheila Kuehl on Friday, June 6th.

Friday, June 6th will not just be the start of the annual Gay/Pride weekend in West Hollywood, California. This year, the West Hollywood Lesbian Visibility Committee (WeHo LVC) and its sponsor, The City of West Hollywood, are planning a string of events that promises to be the highlight of the weekend. Along with the annual Dyke March, performances by several main stream, “out” artists, and speeches by prominent members of the lesbian community, the celebration will also include the presentation of this year's Etheridge Award to recipient, Senator Shelia Kuehl.

Named after one of the most visible and respected lesbians in our country’s history, Melissa Etheridge, the Etheridge Award is given to a lesbian who exemplifies the utmost character and determination in today’s society. Always honest and forthright about her own lifestyle, Melissa Etheridge’s musical career and personal travails have been part of a public journey that has inspired many lesbians throughout the world. WeHo LVC has acknowledged her incredible contribution to the lesbian community by naming an annual award after her, honoring individuals who have made a significant impact within and for the lesbian community. Established in 2007, Etheridge herself received the first Etheridge Award. The second recipient will be actress-turned-politician, Senator Shelia Kuehl (D-California).

As a young actress, Kuehl was best known for her portrayal of the "irrepressible" Zelda Gilroy in the long-running 1950s TV show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. However, in 1965 she changed her focus to academics with an acceptance from Harvard Law School. Still unafraid of the spotlight, she chaired the celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first group of women to be admitted to Harvard Law (1950) when she graduated in 1975.

Kuehl was first elected to the California State Assembly in 1994, becoming the first openly gay person elected to the California legislature. She served as Speaker pro tempore during the 1997-98 legislative sessions becoming the first woman in California history to hold the position. In 2000, after three terms in the Assembly, she was elected to the California State Senate, beating Assemblyman Wally Knox in the Democratic Primary. Re-elected in 2004 with 65.7% of the vote, she has been dubbed the "smartest" member of the California Legislature by the California Journal.

In 2006 she sponsored a bill that would prohibit any school district in California from adopting instructional material that discriminates against persons based on their gender or sexual orientation.

Gay/Lesbian Pride Weekends all over the world continue to garner huge crowds with parades, corporate sponsors, entertainment, vendors and free promotional gifts. Many businesses, particularly Gay/Lesbian run, look to this weekend as a way to find new clientele and increase revenue and community support. WeHo LVC will use this highly visible and exciting time to reach out to women locally and all over the world, encouraging them to be a part of their outreach programs, join the Dyke March, witness the Etheridge Award presentation and celebrate at the LVC after party. Who knows, maybe one day West Hollywood will create its own Dinah Shore Weekend and call it, the LVC Weekend.

Senator Sheila Kuehl Quote and Passed Legislature

     Senator Sheila Kuehl

When we asked Senator Kuehl how she felt about the award and how she felt being a lesbian in America had changed since she initially came out she replied, “I am grateful and totally jazzed about receiving the Etheridge Award not only because it's wonderful to be honored by your own, but because it's named after Melissa. In many many ways, it's easier to be joyful as a lesbian in California, freer, able to focus on work and family as never before. But there's no question, it's still difficult for young women coming out, women at work, and lesbians in school. This march and all our gatherings continue to give hope to all lesbians in our state that they can lead full and joyful lives, impact politics and generally raise hell.”

Here are some of the important legislature Senator Kuehl has passed since she has been in public service.

AB 1999: (1998) Amends California hate crime statutes to include crimes against a person’s gender or perceived gender. First transgender inclusive anti-hate crime bill in the nation.

AB 537: The California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000: extends hate crime prevention to California’s public schools: protects LGBT students in public school against discrimination and harassment

AB 1670 - Civil Rights Amendments of 1999. The most comprehensive reform to California's civil rights statutes since the 1960's. (1999)

AB 2062: Strengthens the Fair Employment and Housing Act which protects against discrimination based on race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, marital status, sex, sexual orientation or age.

SB 257: (2001) Requires California public school safety plans to include anti-discrimination and hate crime programs and the inclusion of hate crime reporting procedures. Authorizes school districts to seek grant money for proactive anti-hate crime efforts, including conflict resolution and anti-bias training for students, teachers and administrators.

SB 1945: Redefines period in which a person may file a discrimination complaint with the Department of Fair Employment and Housing from one year after the alleged violation took place to one year after the complaining party learned the identity of the person responsible for the alleged discrimination.

SB 1661 - Paid Family Leave Act. First comprehensive paid family leave legislation in the United States. Eligible family members include domestic partner. (2002)

SB 71: (2003) California Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Act. Revised California’s sexual health statutes to provide bias free, medically accurate, age appropriate comprehensive sexual health education to California teenagers. Simplifies procedures by which parents may ‘opt out’ of sex education programs for their children (eliminating all cumbersome processes by which parents may have been obliged to ‘opt in’).

SB 1234: (2004) Strengthens and clarifies anti-hate crime legislation to clarify, among other things, gender provisions that apply to “perceived” gender characteristics. Strengthened protections for victims and witnesses, enhanced law enforcement protocols and increased training Clarifies that crimes committed against persons because of the victims’ gender presentation are, for the purposes of California law, hate crimes.

SB 1471: Strengthens law regarding age appropriate and scientifically accurate sexual health and HIV prevention education in California’s public schools to include prohibitions about materials that are discriminatory with regard to sexual orientation and/or promote specific religious doctrine.

SB 973 Domestic Partners and Retirement - amends the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS), and the County.

Congratulations to Senator Kuehl for Her Outstadning Work for the Community!!!
